West Yorkshire Prison Is 'Slipping Backwards'

Friday, January 27th 2012 00:00

Damning report reveals worrying standards at HMP Wealstun.

A worrying report released today, says one West Yorkshire prison has a 'serious drug problem' with half of prisoners obtaining drugs on a regular basis.

It follows an inspection on HMP Wealstun near Wetherby, which also found it was slipping backwards and inmates were deliberately self-harming to be moved elsewhere.

The report also said the prison's safety had deteriorated in recent years.

It did note, however, that the prison delivered reasonably good outcomes for prisoners in most areas, but there were some significant concerns.

Nick Hardwick, Chief Inspector of Prisons, said: "The prison is clearly slipping backwards. The deterioration in safety is the most obvious example but there is a disturbing sense of lack of grip in other areas too."

"The issues identified in this report need to be addressed quickly and effectively to prevent them from becoming even more serious.”
